Sewing Class

This past spring, Holly and I, taught a 9 week Beginners Sewing Class for my local homeschooling group during our Spring session of Monday classes. We had a class of 7, which included 6 girls, and 1 boy. That poor boy was my son! We worked through the basics of the parts of a sewing machine, types of fabric, the difference between ironing and pressing, etc.

Their first project was a drawstring bag to carry their notions in.

Their second project was a Friendship Strip Quilt. They each brought in a light fabric and a dark fabric. We cut them into strips and passed out one strip of each fabric to each student. After sewing the strips together in their choice of order, they turned and topstitched a flannel backing, and finally a few lines of quilting to hold it all together.

We have a fine arts night at the end of the year. I called in a staff member from a local quilt shop, Creations Sew Clever, to judge the quilts. We provided the ribbons, and the quilt shop so kindly brought a goody bag for each student! They loved it!

This is my son, Aaron, with his finished quilt. He didn't get a ribbon...but she said his stitches were straight. He also did some fancy stitches for the quilting. But...

He is a boy after all. And what boy wouldn't want a cape instead of a quilt!

I proceeded to teach him how to make a buttonhole and sew on a button.

He now has a cape which everyone thinks is cool!

~Another Sundress!~

Here's another sundress made this week. This one took at little longer than an hour to make, but there were 11 kids in the house at the time, ranging from 10 months to 11 years old. I made it all out of the same fabric, one that Kyana picked out a few weeks ago!

Rainbow "Pupcakes"

I got a text from my husband while grocery shopping. Text reads, "Kyana wants pupcakes." I replied that I would see what I could do. Apparently, that made her very happy!

You see, my daughter has a hard time saying cupcake. Just as one of the boys used to call juice, jupes. He learned to say juice, just as I'm sure she will one day say cupcake.

But for the time being, we all laugh and enjoy our pupcakes!

I got the idea from Skip To My Lou and her Red, White, and Blue cupcakes!

Kyana chose blue, yellow, and green, with pink for the icing.

For the icing, I used a Butter Icing from a Fannie Farmer cookbook I had borrowed from the library a few months ago. Very good. I would love to have that Fannie Farmer cookbook sitting on my shelf. Lots of great recipes!

Sew It: The Sundress

Readers vote on tutorials that they would like to try. The readers that want to participate have 10 days to make the item and post a link to their item. I stumbled upon it and decided to give it a go. The tutorial voted in for this Sew it was The Sundress by From an Igloo.

First, I worked out my daughter's measurements. Then, with my daughter's measurements I was able to use 2 fat quarters and some leftover fabric from Alyssa's quilt, and began cutting. It is said to be a one hour sundress. I'm sure it would have been without my many distractions!!

My daughter in her new dress. I had it done Friday and she was able to wear it to church on Sunday!

Embellished Shirt

Here is an outfit that I made for my daughter, Kyana.

I made the ruffle skirt, took a piece of the stripe fabric, and went to buy a shirt to match. Well, the only the stripe fabric had yellow in it, the flower fabric didn't. So, I wanted a way to pull it all together. Here's what I did.

I took both fabrics, cut out 2 flower shapes, one a little larger than the other, used rick rack for the stem, and a little green from my stash for the leaves. I finished it off by adding a button to the center of the flower.

It's a fun outfit that my daughter loves to wear.

My only complaint is that I would have liked to see the bottom ruffle be a little longer.

The Quilter's Apprentice

The Quilter's Apprentice by Jennifer Chiaverini was fantastic! I somehow managed to finish reading it in 2 days! Two days! Of course, that means I stayed up too late for 2 nights in a row.

I have previously read The Quilter's Homecoming, and also enjoyed it.

Jennifer's book, The Lost Quilter, was chosen as one of Choose to Read Ohio 2011 Titles.
